The device (7) has an operating element (9) removably positioned on a housing (8) for setting the operating conditions of cooking hob (1), by relatively moving the operating element with respect to the housing. In the first relative position (10) of operating element, selection of first cooking zone (3) is carried out and in the different second relative position (11), selection of second cooking zone (5) is carried out. A third relative position (12) of operating element is formed by the difference of other two relative positions, such that the common cooking zones are selected. An independent claim is included for a method of operating a cooking hob.
