A fuel cell system (100, fig 1a) comprises a fuel cell (102, fig 1a) having an exhaust (104, fig 1a), and a liquid separator (106, fig 1a). The liquid separator comprises an inlet 108 coupled to the exhaust of the fuel cell, an outlet 110, a drain 112, and a separation chamber 114 defining a fluid flow path between the inlet 108 and the outlet 110. The separation chamber 114 comprises a plurality of channel structures 116 each having an open channel face disposed towards the upstream direction of the fluid flow path and having a channel axis extending in a direction towards the drain 112. The lower region of the separation chamber 114 may include a plenum 126, and one or more baffle plates 120, 122 may also be present to direct flow of liquid within the chamber. The channel structures 116 may vary in number, pitch, depth and/or width according to their position in the fluid flow path (fig 4). The channel structures 116 may be C-shaped, and may include hydrophobic regions towards the drain end and hydrophilic regions away from the drain end. In a further aspect, the liquid separator is part of a fluid processing component and includes cooling means configured to cool the plurality of channel structures (figs 5 and 6). |
