[Also in Group XXVI] A bearing structure comprises a shaft 17 in a journal box 19, a bushing 22 on the shaft and extending into the box, the bushing being rotatable with respect to the box and shaft, means for forming a film of lubricant between the bushing, the box and the shaft, and means 33 for creating a restraining torque on the bushing. A shaft 12 carries a centrifugal air compressor 11 and a radial flow turbine wheel 10 driven by the exhaust gas from an I.C. engine. The shaft journal 17 is supported in sleeve bearings 22, 23 in boxes 19, 20 of a housing 18. Thrust washers 25, 26, 27 are clamped by a screw 30 and housing part 15a, acting through a spring 29, to retain the bearing sleeve 22. Thrust washers 32, 34 spaced by the spring 33 cause the sleeve 23 to be held against a washer 35. Surrounding the bearings is a pressure-fed oil reservoir 40. The effect of the spring 33 is to restrain the sleeves 22, 23 from rotation while allowing them to float between the housing and shaft on substantial oil films. The spring may be replaced by oil pressure or any other device serving to restrain the sleeves. The bearing is stated to prevent oil film whirl and shaft whip-up to at least 80,000 r.p.m.
