SHARPENING APPARATUS

A portable sharpening apparatus includes a cavity or mouth 28 in a body (10, figure 1B) for receiving an object 1 to be sharpened, a surfacing member (18, figure 6) having an axis of operation, located in the body and driven by a motor (20, figure 4), the cavity or mouth directing and orientating the object 1 at the surfacing member by means of supports 26. The surfacing member may be a rotating drum. The supports may comprise fingers biased e.g. by leaf springs through slots 40 towards the inside of the cavity, the fingers 26c, 26b being displaced by the tool when it is inserted in an opening (12, figure 3) in the body, providing guides for tools of different widths. Displacement of the fingers may trigger a switch (23, figure 6) for operation of the motor, or the motor may be triggered by displacement of a gate (50, figure 10). The tool may be a scraper or chisel and may be inserted perpendicular or at an angle to the axis of operation (figure 8). A belt hook (14, figure 2) may be provided on the body.
