972,993. Cold separation of gas mixtures. PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. May 4, 1961 [May 7, 1960], No. 16204/61. Heading F4P. Readily condensable impurities e.g. water vapour and carbon dioxide are separated from a gas mixture e.g. air to be rectified or merely liquefied by passing the mixture through a layer of snow 10 formed at one end 6B of a roll 6 of apertured strip material having its other end 6A connected to a source of cold e.g., a liquid air bath 2; the mixture being admitted in the direction of the arrows p parallel to the axis of the roll 6 and being discharged radially in the direction of arrows q. Snow formation is assisted by layers 8 of relatively coarse gauge projecting from the inflow end 6B of the roll 6. In a modification the endwall 6A of the roll 6 is cooled by being connected to the head of a gas refrigerator. |
