 A method and apparatus for tapering an edge of a fibrous reinforcement sheet 18 for a composite structure comprises a support 12 for the sheet and a rotary tool 21 capable of relative translational movement with respect to the sheet and wherein the rotation of the tool defines a cutting direction transverse to the tapered edge. Preferably, the cutting direction is orthogonal and toward a free extremity of the edge. Relative movement between the tool and the sheet may advance the tool across the sheet in a direction substantially parallel to or orthogonal to the edge including intermittent retraction of the tool from the edge. The support for the sheet preferably has a concave-curved configuration such that the tool defines a cutting arc that substantially intersects, or forms a tangent with, an arc of curvature of the support. A vacuum system 31 may be provided for holding the sheet against the support which may be cooled 32. Preferably, the tool is a cutting disc or a grinding wheel. |
