[Also in Group XVI] Apparatus for punching data representations in a control tape includes a carriage forming part of a controlling typewriter movable successively to different character spaces, a keyboard having a plurality of selectively actuated character representing elements, spacing means operable when actuated to advance the carriage one character space, a tabulating key punch mechanism, means to actuate the latter to punch in a control' tape designations corresponding to the characters represented by the actuated keyboard elements, and means operable by the carriage for rendering a punch-activating mechanism active and inactive at preselected positions of the carriage, a control key with means responsive to the operation thereof for rendering active the carriage operable means, a punch in the punch mechanism for punching a plurality of feed holes in the control tape upon a single operation of the tabulating key, and means responsive to operation of the carriage operable means for rendering this punch inoperative after a predetermined number of feed holes have been punched after a single operation of the tabulating key. The tape may be used to control tabulating card &c. punching mechanism. The typewriter is operated by a continuously rotating power roller 10 driven as by a motor M. The record receiving sheet is trained about the platen 16 carried on a carriage 18 which reciprocates on rails 20. Type bar action.-Each type bar 14 is rocked about a segment wire 24 through a link 28 by, means of a sub-lever 26 operated by a power cam 30. The cams 30 are urged by springs 36 so that a serrated surface 34 of the cams is slightly spaced from roller 10. A lateral stud 40 on the lever 26 engages in a slot in a latch 42, the latch being also embraced by an ear 44 on lever 26, and spring-urged forwardly. Operation of the key lever 46, which contacts the latch 42, will rock the cam 30 clockwise so that the surface 34 contacts the roller 10 whereupon the cam and lever 26 are rocked clockwise operating the type bar. When lever 26 is rocked a finger 54 thereof contacts a flange 56 on a finger 58 of a selector bar. A flange 64 on a sleeve 62 carried by a bar 60 is in contact with flange 56 and is rotated thereby, and an ear 66 on sleeve 62 is connected to a link 68 which operates the ribbon lift linkage. A cam knock-out bar 70 pivoted in the side frame and oscillated by continuously rotating eccentric 72 has spring fingers 74 which bear against operated cams 30 to ensure that the contact between the cams and roller 10 is broken after the typing stroke. Margin setting and release.-Depression of the margin set key 76 operates through lever 78, link 80, pivoted lever arm 82, and slot and stud 86 to rotate the pivoted finger 88 so that the end 92 thereof bears against the top of the margin stop 94 to release the latter from the stop rack 96 and permit its adjustment thereto. Depression of the margin release key 150 operates lever 152 and link 154 to release the margin stops. Space key.-Each depression of the space key 98 results in the closure of the space key contact SKC through the mechanism of lever 100 and link 102, and SKC is in circuit with space magnet SM which when energized rocks link 104 to engage the space cam 106 with roller 10. As the cam frame 108 is rocked about pivot 110 link 112 is drawn to the left in Fig. 10 to rock plate 114 and thence shaft 116 and lever arm 118 to operate trip lever 120 to cause carriage spacing through conventional mechanism. A finger 124 on the cam frame 108 is normally in contact with the movable blade of a normally open space cam contact SPCC, which is in the punching circuits. Tabulating.-Each depression of the tabulating key 126 results in the closure of the tabulating key contact TKC1, through lever 128 and link 130. TKC1 is in circuit with a tabulating magnet TM (not shown), and energization of the latter causes through the armature 140, and links 138, 136, the tabulating cam 134 to be tripped into contact with roller 10. Thus cam frame 132 is rocked about pivot 110, and actuates link 142 and tabulating release, bell crank 144, the latter causing tabulating movement in known manner. A finger 148 on the cam frame 132 lies in contact with the movable blade of a tabulating cam contact TCC. Depending on the condition of control circuits, actuation of the tabulating key will (a) tabulate normally (if POC1 is open or if POC2 is closed, other than in a start punch insert position); or (b) punch a " 2 " hole and tabulate (if the punch on key is depressed at a start punch insert position); or (c) auto-space the carriage and record space codes in the tape from the last character to the next " punch off " position (if an auto-space insert is operating). Carriage return.-Bail 168 rocked by lever 158 when key 156 is depressed actuates the trip lever 166 through link 178, and lever 166 releases the carriage return cam 164 into contact with roller 10 thereby causing the cam frame 162 to be rocked about pivot 110. The bail 168 is returned and held by spring 182. Alternatively, lever 166 may be tripped by means of the carriage return solenoid CRS, the core of which is connected by spring 186 to a pin 184 on the extension 178 of bail 168. The carriage return clutch 190 is controlled through link 188 by the rocking of frame 162, the link being attached to a cam plate 192 which cams at 204 about a thick pivot 206 and is pivoted on a cam-operating plate 196 which rocks about shaft 198 to engage the clutch discs together thereby winding the return tape 202 which is attached to the carrier. Spring 210 holds follower 208 against the cam plate 192 during return of the carriage. The return clutch release lever 214, rocked when the carriage engages member 216, acts through link 218, pivot plate 220, and link 222, to rock plate 208 against the tension of spring 210, permitting spring 226 to return the cam plate 192 and thus release the clutch discs. CRS is in circuit with an end of card key contact ECC (not shown) so that closure of the latter energizes CRS. Keyboard lock.-The comb 232 on shaft 230 is rocked to lock the key levers when the power switch 228 is turned to the " off " position, or by means of a keyboard lock solenoid KLS, the core of which is connected by a spring 246 to a member 238 pivoted about shaft 240 and connected by a link 236 to an arm 234 on shaft 230. Back spacing.-Through a lever 250, the backspace key 248 trips a back space cam into contact with roller 10, and the cam actuates a backspace pawl 256 through links 252, 254. Selector mechanism.-The selector unit 258 provides a means for coding most of the key lever cams to punch a seven-hole code into the tape. The tape code in relation to the index points of a tabulating code is given. The unit 258 comprises a frame 260, 262, 264 slotted at front and rear to provide guide combs for a plurality of selector slides 274, springs 276 keeping the slides in contact with a stop bar. A slides 274 is provided for the cam assembly of each character that is to be punched in the tape. A finger 286 extends from each slide 274 for each selector unit bail 288, and the fingers are readily broken off so that the slides may be coded by arranging the number and position of the fingers on each slide. When a slide is reciprocated the fingers 286 meet the flanges 290 of associated bails 288 to rock the latter. Each bail has an operating finger 292 which when one bail is rocked closes associated contacts 294, as shown SCC1, SC1 ... SCC2, with two bails not in use. Contacts 294 are in the punch circuits. The selector common contact SCC1 closes each time any slide 274 is reciprocated, i.e. the corresponding finger 286 is left intact on all slides. Contacts SC1-SC7 control magnets for punching the 1-7 code holes respectively. SC8 controls the spacing of the tape when a special character is printed when the auto spacing feature is in operation, and SCC2 provides a common bail for the SC8 contact. The bails are returned by springs 296. Perforating apparatus.-The perforating apparatus includes a common die block 302 and a punch element 300 for each unit of the code, the elements sliding in a guide block 304 and normally retracted by springs 306 and each recessed at 312 to receive one end of an individual punch lever 316, the latter being aligned by guides 324, 326, and oscillated about 312 by means of cams 320 on a shaft 322 which are disposed in oval openings 318 in the levers. The levers 316 are spaced by washers 328, 330 and the fore end of each lever extends into a slot of a guide comb 332. Each lever 316 has a latch member 334 pivoted at 336 and guided in combs 332, 338, and having a shoulder 340, normally held out of the path of the oscillating end of lever 316 by the armatuer 342 of an individual magnet 344 engaging the arm 346a. When magnet 344 is energized, arm 346a is released and member 334 swung by spring 348 to position shoulder 240 in the path of lever 316. Shaft 322 rotates in a start-stop manner and members 334 latch levers 316 before the latter are oscillated by cams 320 on shaft 322, whereupon the levers 316 pivot about their latched ends, and force the punch element 300 downwardly to perforate the tape 350. A common locking bail 354 is moved by a cam to engage arms 336a so as to hold displaced members 334 in their latched positions and prevent the displacement of undesired members 334 as cam 320 rotates, and is returned upon perforation of the tape. Members 334 are returned, releasing punch elements 300, by a reset bail 360 which is rotated about shaft 364 during each cycle of shaft 322 by means of a cam on shaft 322 engaging a follower on shaft 364.
