[Also in Group XXXVI] An energy converter comprises a capacitor with a dielectric whose permittivity changes with temperature, coupled with means to charge the capacitor at a given temperature and means to apply heat to the capacitor and thereby change the dielectric permittivity which change varies the electrical energy stored in the capacitor and thereby converts heat energy to electrical energy or vice-versa. In a refrigeration system use is made of the fact that over a range of temperatures the dielectric possesses different specific heats in its charged and uncharged conditions. Embodiments are described for generating electric current (see Group XXXVI), and a system is described in which solar radiation provides the power to drive a refrigeration equipment, both the power generation and the refrigeration being by the method of this invention. Refrigeration.-Fig. 19 shows a system comprising capacitors 90 linked together to form two endless belts 85 and 86. The capacitors on belt 85 are charged as they pass brush 95, then heated as they pass from wheel 88 to wheel 97 by, e.g., solar radiation 96 and the increased energy is picked off by brush 98 and used to energize motor 99 to drive the second belt 86. The capacitors on this belt are charged at brush 101 and this charge increases the specific heat of the dielectric. Since the heat energy in the dielectric is constant an increase in the specific heat is accompanied by a decrease in temperature. The cooler capacitors pass into the chamber formed by the walls 103 and pick up heat from this chamber, on passing brush 104 the capacitors are discharged with a consequent decrease in specific heat and rise in temperature, the excess heat being radiated to the ambient atmosphere at 106. The load 105 it is suggested might be a battery which could be used to operate the driving motor for belt 85. Dielectric materials.-Ferro-electric materials such as barium titanate are said to be suitable.</p>
