906,422. Prolonged acting tablets. WELLCOME FOUNDATION Ltd. April 17, 1959 [May 2, 1958], No. 14061/58. Class 81 (1). A tablet capable of giving prolonged acting medication comprises a substantially homogeneous mixture of a medicament in a medium comprising casein in an amount of from 20 to 60% by weight of the mixture and a sparingly water-soluble lipid binding material which is optionally digestible in the alimentary fluids and is in an amount of from 10 to 50% by weight of the mixture. The lipid binding material consists of one of the following or a mixture thereof: (a) vegetable and animal waxes such as beeswax, Japan-wax, spermaceti and wool fat, (b) solid hydrogenated fixed oils and fats such as hydrogenated castor, palm and lard oils. It may be mixed with solid fatty acids such as stearic or palmitic acids or salts of such fatty acids, e.g. calcium or magnesium stearate or palmitate or zinc oleate. The tablet may be in the form of compressed granules or may be in the form of an inner core 1 (Fig. 1) around which is a layer of the above substantially homogeneous mixture 2. An outer layer 3 may be applied consisting of a dose of a medicament in a readily soluble base such as a sugar, sodium chloride or magnesium sulphate. A conventional sugar coat 4 completes the tablet. Alternatively, the tablet core may comprise granules of the homogeneous mixture 5 (Fig. 2) compressed with granules 6 of readily soluble material.
