[Also in Group XXV] A blind rivet assembly includes a headed tubular rivet 22 and a. break-off mandrel 24 which has an enlarged end 34 and has longitudinally extending circumferentially spaced ribs 40 on the shank thereof in which notches 50 are made by the gripping means 48 of a riveting tool 42. The head 26 of the rivet has a recess 32 into which metal is shaved, from the enlarged end of the mandrel, by the nose 44 of the tool, to lock the broken-off stub in the rivet. Fig. 6 shows a mandrel in which part of the ribbed shank 70 is a clearance fit in the rivet and a part 68 is an interference fit to retain the assembly during handling prior to setting. In a modification (Fig. 8) the enlarged part 88 has helical ribs. The rivet may also be set by a tool 100 in which the gripping member 102 acts on one side only of the shank and has transverse teeth 104 adapted to bite into the ribs 40 to form notches 106 therein. |
