Patent No. 594424 Disclosed is a non-headed lettuce plant of the species Lactuca sativa, which plant has a genetic constitution that leads to UV-independent red colouring of the leaves, which genetic constitution comprises a gene locus for anthocyanin expression, and two gene loci that are involved in the UV-independent anthocyanin expression in the inner leaves and wherein such genetic constitution is as found in seeds as deposited on 18 July 2005 with the NCIMB under accession numbers NCIMB 41337, NCIMB 41338 and NCIMB 41339.
