A method of adjusting a slab of material wherein the slab has an underside at least partially in contact with ground below the slab, the method including the steps of: a) forming a hole through the slab; b) forming a cavity under the hole and beneath the slab in the vicinity of the hole; c) forming a first bearing surface below the cavity and hole by inserting a first load bearing material into or onto the ground; d) locating a spacer on the first bearing surface such that a portion of the spacer is directly beneath the hole and a portion of the spacer is directly beneath the underside of the slab; e) inserting a second load bearing material into the cavity around the spacer to form a second bearing surface in proximity to the underside of the slab; f) locating a lifting device within the spacer and directly below the underside of the slab; and g) operating the lifting device to adjust the slab.
