In order to extract only the headlights of oncoming vehicles and taillights of preceding vehicles from various points of light at night time on the basis of information acquired from a stereo camera, and provide a safer field of view to a driver, an image processing apparatus is provided with: a first distance information calculation means for calculating first distance information relating to the distance to a detection candidate, from two images picked up by a first image pickup element and a second image pickup element; a second distance information calculation means for calculating second distance information relating to the distance to a detection candidate, from an image picked up by the first image pickup element; and an object detection means for comparing the first distance information and the second distance information, and detecting an object from among the detection candidates on the basis of the result of the comparison. |
