KNOWLEDGE-BASED MULTI-SCALE HISTOGRAM ANALYSIS

A histogram analysis method for automatically identifying a desired anatomic structure in a medical image and a system for carrying out this method are disclosed. A histogram associated with the medical image is divided to form at least one histogram segment having the desired anatomical structure based on an expected intensity value of the anatomic structure. For each histogram segment, one or more peak intensity value is detected. If more than one peak intensity is detected, the histogram segment is recursively sub-divided. Each histogram segment is compared with the expected intensity values of the desired anatomical structure and the histogram segment is automatically identified with the anatomic structure.
