<p>This method for producing a beta-mercaptocarboxylic acid involves: a step (a) of obtaining a reaction solution including a compound represented by general formula (2) and a compound represented by general formula (3) by reacting a compound represented by the formula X1 2S (wherein X1 represents hydrogen, Na, or K) or a compound represented by the formula X2SH (wherein X2 represents Na or K), an alkali hydroxide represented by the formula X3OH (wherein X3 represents Na or K), and an unsaturated carboxylic acid represented by general formula (1); a step (b) of obtaining a reaction solution including a beta-mercaptocarboxylic acid represented by general formula (4) and a compound represented by general formula (5) by neutralizing the reaction solution obtained in said step (a) with an acid; a step (c) of obtaining the beta-mercaptocarboxylic acid represented by general formula (4) by purifying, by distillation, the reaction solution obtained in said step (b); and a step (d) of returning, to said step (a), the distillation residue of said step (c) including the compound represented by general formula (5).</p> |
