Plutonium is recovered from an aqueous nitric acid solution by converting the plutonium into the quadrivalent form and adsorbing and eluting the plutonium successively in a series of ion-exchange beds containing alternately anion-exchange material and cation-exchange material, the acidity of the influent solution to the anion-exchange beds being at least 4 molar and to the cation-exchange beds less than 1 molar. A nitric acid solution containing plutonium obtained by solvent extraction of a solution of neutron-irradiated uranium is treated with ferrous sulphamate to reduce the plutonium to the tervalent form, and then with sodium nitrite to convert the plutonium to the quadrivalent form. The solution, 7N in nitric acid, is passed through a column of anion-exchange resin which adsorbs the plutonium; after washing with 7N nitric acid, the plutonium is eluted with 0.2N nitric acid, and the resin regenerated with 7N nitric acid. The eluate is passed directly to a column of cationexchange resin where plutonium is again adsorbed; washing is carried out with 0.2N nitric acid and elution with 7N nitric acid, the column being regenerated with 0.2 nitric acid. These steps are repeated as necessary. In order to reduce the volume of the eluate, some plutonium may be left adsorbed to mix with that from a succeeding influent solution. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 806,202.</p>
