The surface of a rubber or other sheet S disposed on a table 2 is roughened by means of a rotary cutter 90 pivotable about a rod 44 forming part of a carriage 12 supported and movable along rods 5, 6, 7 of the framework of a machine which is supported on wheels 8, 8a movable over the table 2, the cutter being mounted on a shaft 91 and comprising wire bristles 92 which extend through an opening 136 in a slidable plate 130 which keeps the sheet S flat. The cutter forms part of a cutting assembly which has an adjustable apparatus comprising a member 79 to which the plate 130 is attached, the member 79 having mounted thereon a hollow eccentric member 80 provided with holes 84 into one of which the finger 72 of an adjusting screw 70 extends. Member 80 has a sleeve portion 86 which is movable eccentrically about a fixed bearing 48 for the cutter shaft 91, upon actuation of the screw 70 by a handle 76, to change the position of the plate 130 relative to the cutter 90 to adjust the depth of cut. Member 79 includes a side extension plate 108 provided with castor wheels 118, 120 which run upon the sheet S and provide the main support for the cutting assembly. Plate 108 has a collar 122 which is rotatable on sleeve portion 86, thus permitting pivotal movement of the adjusting apparatus as the cutting assembly moves over the sheet S. Movement of the cutting assembly towards or away from the sheet S is effected by means of a cam 54 operable by a handle 52. Cuttings are removed by means of a vacuum box 126 connected by a conduit 128 to a vacuum tank 132. |
