911,091. Electric immersion heaters. SIMPLEX ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 15, 1959 [Jan. 15, 1958], No. 1377/58. Class 39 (3). [Also in Group XVIII] A consumable anode 15, for the cathodic protection of an electric immersion heater, is swaged over a sheath 16 which encloses a heating element 13 and is made of a more noble metal than the sheath 16 and its associated parts, which would be also subject to corrosion. The heater comprises a hexagonal member 10 which has a screw-threaded spigot 11 for attachment to a tank, not shown, and carries the heating element 13 with its sheaths 15, 16 and a housing 14 for a thermostat which does not support a cathodic protection sheath. The sheath 15, made, e.g. of aluminium, is applied over the sheath 16 before the element is bent to the form shown. The whole surface of the sheath 16 may not be covered by the sheath 15 in which case adjacent ends of the latter are sealed to the sheath 16. In a modification the sheath 16 of the heating element is left completely exposed, the protective sheath 15, in this case carried by the thermostat housing 14, being electrically bonded to the member 10 and the sheath 16. The mass of the protective sheath is made sufficiently large to last for the lifetime of the heater; smaller, replaceable, electrodes, however, may be fitted.
|
