<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a planar lighting device having a housing frame capable of stably holding a light guide plate with a wide emission face, without requiring high dimension precision. <P>SOLUTION: As for the planar lighting device 10, a housing frame 14 includes a first frame 11 having a first floor section 31 on which the light guide plate 13 is mounted and a second frame 12 having a second floor section 41 on which the first frame 11 is mounted. The first frame 11 has a pair of divided frames 21a, 21b arranged so that mutual opposed faces may be opposed to each other with intervals d<SB POS="POST">1</SB>, d<SB POS="POST">2</SB>.
