<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light modulator that reduces a difference in in-plane temperature in a glass substrate for holding a polarizing plate to suppress unevenness in in-plane illuminance, and a projector. <P>SOLUTION: A light modulator 5 includes: a liquid crystal panel 342 having an effective pixel area 3421 that modulates light beams emitted from a light source device 30 in accordance with image information, and a transmission area 3423 that transmits the light beams outside the effective pixel area 3421; and a polarizing plate unit 6 having an emission-side polarizing plate 343 that is installed on a light-emission side of the liquid crystal panel 342, and a glass substrate 61 that holds the emission-side polarizing plate 343.
