<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light modulator that reduces a difference in in-plane temperature in a glass substrate for holding a polarizing plate to suppress unevenness in in-plane illuminance, and a projector. <P>SOLUTION: A light modulator 5 includes: a liquid crystal panel 342 having an effective pixel area 3421 that modulates light beams emitted from a light source device 30 in accordance with image information, and a transmission area 3423 that transmits the light beams outside the effective pixel area 3421; and a polarizing plate unit 6 having an emission-side polarizing plate 343 that is installed on a light-emission side of the liquid crystal panel 342, and a glass substrate 61 that holds the emission-side polarizing plate 343. In view from the emission side of the light beams, an outer shape of the polarizing plate 3431 is positioned to be inside the transmission area 3423. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
