A luminaire intended to cover part at least of a wall or ceiling comprises at least one light diffusing closed cell arranged in front of a light source and having front and rear light passing panels spaced apart by side wall portions having internal reflecting surfaces and diverging away from the rear panel so as to form a forwardly projecting continuation of the reflecting surface of a reflector behind the light source. The cell is held in front of the reflector by springs. In the form shown, a supporting grid of intersecting rails 5 is suspended from the ceiling by hangers 10 and carries U-shaped brackets 1 secured to a channel 2 on which the lamps 25 are supported. A reflector B of elongated form for use with e.g. fluorescent lamps is secured to the underside of the channel 2. The light diffusing cell C has a curved rear wall 15 of transparent or translucent material, a flat front wall 14 of translucent material and internally reflecting side walls 16 shaped to form a continuation of the surface of the reflector B. The cell is supported by springs 35 which terminate in hooks engaging rods on the side walls of the cell, a fingerpiece being provided for releasing the hooks from the rods so that the cell can be swung down about either edge or removed for cleaning. The springs may be carried by the brackets 1 or by the edges of the reflector, and may be of such length that the upper edges of the side walls of the cell engage the edges of the reflector or are spaced therefrom a small distance to allow of ventilation. |
