[Also in Group XXIX] An artificial valve for a heart, comprising a base ring and a valve member, has a flexible annular pad around the base ring by means of which the valve may be sewn into position. The base ring is built up from a flanged outer portion 129 and an inner ring to which a ball-retaining cage 111 is attached, the two being so shaped as to provide a groove 113 in which the fabric sewing ring 115 is secured by wire 117, around a clamping ring 116, and stitching 120. In the form shown, the ball 112 engages against a seating 127 on a synthetic rubber member 125 which also provides an annular shield 130 to engage the walls of the artery and prevent clots, resulting from the stitching operation, from passing into the blood stream. However, in another form, there is no shield and the ball seating is formed directly on the inner face of the base ring. The body portions may be made of stainless steel but preferably they and the ball are made of acrylic resin. The sewing ring is made from knitted synthetic fibre fabric since the natural tissue grows into the interstices of this and securely retains the valve after the sutures have been dissolved.</p> |
