<p>The invention comprises bis-(2,2,4-trimethyl-pentyl)azelate It may be obtained by esterifying 2,2,4-trimethyl-pentanol with azelaic acid and an example is given in which the esterification is carried out under reflux in the presence of xylene with removal of the water formed. The product is useful as a synthetic lubricant and in high temperature hydraulic fluids. 2,2,4-Trimethyl-pentanol is obtained by the hydrogenation of 2,2,4-trimethyl-4-pentenal. In an example the hydrogenation is carried out over Raney nickel at 125 DEG C. and 2000 p.s.i. pressure in the presence of methanol.</p> |
