The device has a sonotrode (14) and an anvil (16) that are connected with a feed device (18). A detecting unit (30) is provided to detect the electrical resistance between the sonotrode and the anvil. A deactivation signal (D) for the sonotrode and/or the feed device is produced based on the detected electrical resistance. The detecting unit is provided with a tensiometer. An independent claim is included for a method for welding or separation welding of workpiece layer.
