VIDEO CODING METHOD AND APPARATUS USING VARIABLE SIZE MACROBLOCK

PURPOSE: An image coding/decoding method using a macro block of a variable size and a device thereof are provided to determine a reference prediction unit corresponding to a property of an image, thereby efficiently coding and decoding the image with high resolution by using a lot of prediction mode combination for sub-blocks in the macro block. CONSTITUTION: A macro block divider(605) divides a macro block into one or more sub-blocks by using a division type. A motion estimation device(612) estimates motion of a corresponding block by comparing a prediction object block with a stored reference picture. A motion compensator(614) extracts a block in the stored reference picture based on a generated motion vector. An intra-predictor(616) predicts the prediction object block. A coder(620) codes division information which shows a size and a shape of the sub-blocks.
