A remaining amount of air introduced to the chamber is determined, and an amount of fuel to be injected is determined (6), where the determined amount of fuel is injected (8). The amount of fuel is determined by determining an amount of air necessary for combustion (10), and determining the remaining amount of air by subtracting the burned amount of air from the total amount of air introduced (12), where the amount of fuel is determined (14) based on the remaining amount of air.
