<p>PURPOSE: An air conditioner and a control method thereof are provided to obtain the reliability of cooling and heating operations by preventing multiple cycles from starting a defrost operation at the same time because the number of cycles doing the defrost operation is constantly controlled. CONSTITUTION: An air conditioner comprises air handling units(101-103) and a central controller(1). The air handling units comprise cycle controllers(111-119) by which independently operating cycles are individually controlled. The air handling units are connected to the cycle controllers and comprise main controllers(11-13) for monitoring and controlling the cycles. The central controller is connected to the main controllers. The central controller monitors and controls data on the cycles and sets the number of the cycles to be defrosted at the same time.
