<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide chlorite formulations substantially free of deleterious non-chlorite components such as a chlorate ion. <P>SOLUTION: There is provided an aqueous formulation including an aqueous solvent, chlorite and a pH-adjusting agent. The chlorite formulations having a pH between about 7 and about 8 includes pharmaceutical formulations, which are formulated for systemic, parenteral, or intravenous administration. The methods for preparing and methods for using the chlorite formulations are provided.
