Chlorination of o-cresol is effected by reaction with sulphuryl chloride in presence of metal halide catalyst and fuller's earth to give mainly 4-chloro-2-methylphenol; 6-chloro-2-methylphenol, and 4:6-dichloro-2-methylphenol are minor products. Specified catalysts are AlCl3, FeCl3, SnCl4, TiCl4 and ZnCl2. The product may be used to obtain 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyaliphatic acids, e.g. 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid using NaOH and ClCH2 CO2H; presumably 6-chloro and 4:6-dichloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acids are also present. The fuller's earth need not be removed before the chlorinated cresol is converted to the acid.
