The method involves measuring heating current, flowing through a glow plug, and voltage, lying at the glow plug. A temperature-dependant controlled variable is computed from measurement values of the current and voltage. A reference value of the variable is computed from target temperature. The variable is compared with the reference value. Defined voltage is applied to the glow plug, and the heating current, arising during the voltage, is measured. A value is calculated from the voltage and current. Temperature associated with the voltage is obtained by adjusting a function at the value. The controlled variable is electrical resistance of the glow plug.
