A low-price and low-loss optical fiber (1) that is preferably used as an optical transmission path for an optical access network is made from quartz glass. The optical fiber is provided with a center core (11), an optical clad (12) for surrounding the center core and a jacket (13) for surrounding the optical clad. The center core includes GeO2. The relative refractive index difference (∆core) of the center core with reference to the optical clad is from 0.35 to 0.50% and a refractive index volume (v) is from 0.045 to 0.095 µm2. The relative refractive index difference (∆J) of the jacket is 0.03 to 0.20%. The fictive temperature of the glass constituting the center core is 1400 to 1590 °C. The residual stress in the center core is compressive stress and the absolute value thereof is 5 MPa or more.
