The switch (1) has electrical conductor (L) with switching contacts (2) connected by switching mechanism (M). A converter (W) has wire coil wound in layers around core, such that winding direction is changed for two immediately superimposed layers. A current-proportional voltage (UE) is generated and compared with current condition by integrator (IG). The switching mechanism is actuated to separate switching contacts, if it exceeds current threshold value. The core dimensions are equal, so that number of layers and/or windings per layer is increased with increase in switch size.
