<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electromagnetic device for determining the position of a generator or a rotor of a motor. <P>SOLUTION: An electromagnetic device 10 comprises: a stator 20 defining a bore 21; a rotor 30 rotatable within the bore 21 of the stator 20 and having permanent magnetic elements 33 disposed around an outer surface 32 thereof to define a series of magnetic poles 34; power coils 50 configured to generate a power current when a first portion of the magnetic poles 34 passes each of the power coils 50 due to the rotation of the rotor 30; and sense coils 60 configured to generate a sense current when a second portion of the magnetic poles 34 passes each of the sense coils 60 due to the rotation of the rotor 30.
