<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for determining whether a pixel in an image indicates a homogeneous tissue to which a smoothing algorithm should be applied. <P>SOLUTION: An edge detection filter is applied to at least one of a plurality of pixels of an ultrasound image to compute an edge detection value having a magnitude. When an edge detection value is greater than a threshold value, a directional edge enhancement filter is applied to at least one of the plurality of pixels. When the edge detection value is not greater than the threshold value, a non-directional smoothing filter is selected based on the magnitude among the plurality of non-directional smoothing filters and the selected non-directional smoothing filter is applied to at least one of the plurality of pixels. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
