The method involves detecting characteristics of a driver (5) by a sensor, and determining whether the driver performs monitoring control of a vehicle (10) based on the detected characteristics of the driver. A series of requests are provided, where forcefulness of each request is associated with the determination whether the driver performs monitoring control of the vehicle. The series of requests is selected from a group consisting of a pattern of visual signals, a pattern of audio signals, a pattern of haptic warning signals or messages to be read by the driver. An independent claim is also included for a driver attention management system.
