A vertical axis wind turbine (10) comprises: a substantially vertical, central mast (12); one or more blades (14), each blade having an upper tip end and a lower tip end and comprising two or more connected blade segments (14a, 14b, 14c), each defined by a longitudinal axis and a transverse airfoil cross section, wherein the ends of adjacent blade segments are connected together by means of a connection arrangement (22a, 22b) provided between the adjacent blade segments; and at least one support arm (16) extending outwardly from the central mast (12), wherein the peripheral end of each support arm (16) is connected to one of the blades (14) through the connection arrangement (22a, 22b) of that blade. Each blade (14) extends around the central mast (12) such that the upper and lower tip ends are angularly displaced from each other about the central mast. |
