PURPOSE: A plate fracture detecting device and a method thereof are provided to detect a precursor of plate fracture of a steel sheet with an optical method on a real time basis. CONSTITUTION: A plate fracture detecting device comprises a camera(10), a pre-processing unit(21), an edge detector(22), and a size filtering unit(23). The camera photographs the surface of a steel plate(1), thereby generating an original image. The pre-processing unit filters a pixel value constituting the original image and differentiates in a longitudinal direction of the steel plate. The edge detector detects edges from the pre-processed image by using a canny edge detection algorism. The size filtering unit removes edges which size is smaller than preset size.
