- 34 METHOD, APPARATUS AND SYSTEM FOR UPDATING A PROBABILITY ESTIMATE FOR ARITHMETIC CODING A method of updating a current probability estimate (506,507) in arithmetic coding of bin 5 values in a digital video signal processing system. The method tests (801) a current bin value and, where the tested bin value is zero-valued, performs an update function (LPS 803). The update function determines (1001) an inverted probability estimate (509), and an offset value (708) for arithmetic coding using the inverted probability estimate. Determining the offset value involves forming a truncated probability estimate bound to a 10 predetermined range (1201; 1400); inverting (1202; 1301) the truncated probability estimate; multiplying (1204, 1303) the inverted truncated probability estimate and a range value to form a product; and comparing (1206,1305) the product with a predetermined threshold and outputting as the offset value one of the product or the predetermined threshold.
