<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for reducing visual artifacts shown by a display individually using addressable pixels. <P>SOLUTION: A distributed aperture display is provided with an array of pixels, and each pixel has a switchable area 32 having variable permeability or luminance and a non-switchable area 34. The switchable area of each pixel is distributed to at least two simultaneous switchable portions at least partially separated by the significant portion of the non-switchable area.
