<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify computation for obtaining a Mahalanobis distance, and to promptly determine whether or not a plant is normally operated. <P>SOLUTION: A plant operation state monitoring method includes: a step (A) of classifying and dividing state amounts of many monitoring items of the plant into a data group comprising the state amounts of the plurality of monitoring items that are fewer; a Mahalanobis distance computing step (B) of respectively computing the Mahalanobis distance from the state amount for each data group; a Mahalanobis distance individual comparison step (D') of comparing the Mahalanobis distances computed for the respective data groups with a preset threshold; and an abnormality determination step E of determining presence/absence of abnormality by the comparison result.
