<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress light leakage due to potential generated between an electrode on an active matrix substrate and a black matrix on a counter substrate. <P>SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display device comprises: one substrate provided with a switching element; another substrate provided with a black matrix; a liquid crystal layer; a first region which is normally black; and a second region which is normally white. The first region on the one substrate includes a first pixel electrode connected to the switching element, a first common electrode, and a first common electrode line for supplying a first common signal to the first common electrode. The second region on one of the two substrates includes a second common electrode. The second region on the one substrate includes a second pixel electrode connected to the switching element and a second common electrode line for supplying a second common signal to the second common electrode.
