An ethylenically unsaturated monomer is polymerized using as catalyst the product obtained by heating a Group IVA, VA, VIA, VIIA or VIII metal compound and a halide, oxyhalide, alkoxide, alkoxyhalide, aroxide or aroxyhalide of a Group III metal at 25 DEG to 200 DEG C. (optionally in an inert medium), and then adding a polymeric silicon compound containing units of formula <FORM:1016592/C3/1> wherein R is alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkoxy, cycloalkoxy, aryl or aroxy, m is 1, 2 or 3, n is 0, 1 or 2 and m+n is 1, 2 or 3. In examples the catalysts are derived in a paraffin hydrocarbon from TiCl4, TiCl3 and/or VOCl3+AlCl3 or AlBr3+methyl hydrogen polysiloxane. The catalyst optionally may be prepared in the presence of the monomer, a halogen hydrocarbon, a carrier such as a synthetic resin or an inert inorganic compound (e.g. SiO2), or a hydrogen halide; and may be aged before use. The catalyst destruction/purification may be effected with alcohols and/or ketones. |
