An apparatus for use in measuring or controlling a high D.C. voltage comprises a capacitor having one plate 1 connected to the high voltage and the other plate 2 connected to a semi-conductor circuit 11 which allows charges to flow either to earth or to an integrator 13, according to their polarities, this flow being controlled periodically by the movement at a frequency f of an earthed conductive screen 5a between the capacitor plates. The integrator receives, at the same frequency, standard charges of the opposite polarity, and the output of the integrator is connected after suitable amplification to a measuring or control circuit 18. The circuit for supplying standard charges to the integrator may consist of an electro mechanical switch 16 operated at the frequency of the rotating screen 5a which alternately allows a capacitor 15 to charge from a source 14 and discharge into the integrator 13. The action of the rotating screen 5a is to completely charge and discharge the capacitor 1 during each rotation, so that a charge proportional to the voltage V to be measured is passed to the integrator 13. The output of the integrator is passed to a zero detector 18, and the voltage E of the source 14 adjusted until zero output is obtained. A simple relation then exists between the voltages E and V, depending on the capacitors 2 and 15. For control purposes E is kept constant and the circuit 18 used to adjust the high voltage V. An alternative embodiment utilizing a thyratron instead of an electromechanical switch 16 is described (Fig. 3 not shown). |
