Providing on a display device an electronic rendering of a locate operation to detect a presence or an absence of at least one underground facility. At least one electronic detection mark 910, 912, 914, 916 is displayed on the display device, based on a detected magnetic field detected by a locate device. The location of the located device is determined to provide geographic information. Locate information which includes the magnetic field and geographic information is provided to the display device. A digital image of at least a portion of an area in which a locate operation is performed is displayed and an electronic detection mark based on the locate information is overlayed on this. At least one characteristic of the mark is based on the magnetic field information and a position in the display field in which the mark is displayed is based on the geographic information.
