<p>A chain wear gauge (100) for measuring a percentage extension Ec in pitch length of one of a set of chains relative to a predefined characteristic and unique nominal pitch length Pc thereof, comprising: (i) a spanning portion (10) for spanning a cumulative length Ln of a selected number nc of pitches of the selected chain from a selected datum pin thereof to a remote pin thereof, wherein the percentage extension Ec in pitch length to be measured is defined by the following equation (I): Ec = [ (Ln - Pcnc) / Pcnc ] x 100 (l); (ii) an anchoring portion (20) at one end of the spanning portion (10) and comprising an anchoring slot 24 constructed and arranged for pivotably anchoring the selected datum pin in the slot 24 such that the axis of the datum pin defines a positional datum axis; and (iii) a measuring portion (30) at the opposite end of the spanning portion (10) and including an indicator leg portion (132) having a complex contour defined by a locus of an indicator point whose distance Mc from the positional datum axis corresponding to the pin of the selected chain varies as a function of a calculated percentage extension Xc of the selected chain's nominal pitch length Pc according to the following equation (ll): Mc = ncPc (1 + (Xc /100)) - (dc /2) (ll), where dc is the selected chain's characteristic and unique pin diameter; wherein the indicator portion (132) bears indicia (136) for displaying a series of calculated values of percentage extension Xc of the chain's nominal pitch length Pc at a series of indicator locations (li) therealong; whereby upon pivoting of the anchoring portion (20) of the gauge about the anchored datum pin, the indicator portion (132) may be brought into engagement with the remote pin, the engagement being at a measurement location on the indicator portion, and thus the respective calculated percentage extension Xc value displayed at that measurement location on the indicator portion equals the percentage extension Ec in pitch length of the selected chain.</p> |
