The method involves automatically determining whether a field device (3) or a communication apparatus of the field device is attached with a communication interface (6). Field device operating software is automatically executed when the field device or the communication device of the field device is allocated to the operating software on a computing unit (1). A device driver suitable for the field device is automatically determined and automatically started for execution on the computing unit. Field device data is automatically loaded into the device driver. The computing unit is a computer e.g. personal computer or laptop.
