<PICT:0936319/III/1> Metallic, metallo-ceramic or ceramic plates are secured to a carbon body by contacting the metallic, metallo-ceramic or ceramic plate member with a blended mixture of a carbonaceous material and a carbonizable binder in a mould under at least 1000 p.s.i. mechanical pressure to form an assembly with subsequent heating at a rate from 2 DEG to 1000 DEG C. per minute of the assembly by passing an electric current of from 85 to 500 amperes p.s.i. therethrough. The plate member 20 may be provided with a plurality of perforations, or protrusions which may be punchings, bolts or studs 12, 14, 16, 10, Fig. 3a, b, c, d. The plate member can be built up of laminates which are riveted, bolted, welded or brazed together. The carbonaceous material may be, e.g. anthracite coal, petroleum coke, lampblack, natural and artificial graphite, graphite powder but the preferred embodiment is a blended mixture with low shrinkage characteristics of crushed and calcined anthracite coal, graphite powder and crushed coal tar pitch. The plate member may be constructed of steel, Al, Co, Cu, Au, Mo, Ni, Pt, Ag, U, titanium carbide, titanium boride, zirconium boride, non-conductors or semi-conductors such as fire-brick, Si, SiC, sillimanite, boron nitride or silicon nitride. The use of the product in the construction of aluminium production cells is described.
