The invention concerns motion vector prediction in a scalable video encoder / decoder. Motion information predictor is determined in the enhancement layer of a scalable encoding scheme also known as motion derivation process. Either the prediction of motion information in the reference layer from temporal motion information is used in addition to motion information predictors based on motion information of other image blocks belonging to the enhancement layer, or alternate motion information (e.g. null motion vector) is generated, depending on whether the reference layer uses temporal motion vector predictors. Also, scalable motion information is determined for an area of an image of an enhancement layer of a video sequence where part of the scalable motion information is determined from motion information used for temporal prediction in the corresponding area of the reference layer. For this, the determination of the part of scalable motion information from motion information used for temporal prediction in the corresponding area of the reference layer is adjusted if the motion information in the reference layer is not available for the area of the reference layer. |
