A railway coupling mechanism comprises a hook and loop design, wherein the hook part (9, Fig. 3) comprises a platform 8, which will lift the hook from an adjoining coupling (10, Fig. 3 C-C) above the lip (2, Fig. 3 B-B) of the D -shaped front (1, Fig. 1); prevent any further latching; and allow the cars to be uncoupled to facilitate shunting. There may also be mechanisms to raise the hook section; with lifting motion achieved by flipping a lever, which enables a magnet to attract another magnet attached to the hook, moving the hook upwards, and where turning the lever back allows the hook to fall to a rest position. An alternative lifting arrangement is an electric motor attached to the coupling that operates a lifting mechanism, the motor being powered either directly or via a relay from a DCC chip.
