A control apparatus 100 for a welding machine 102 comprises a first interface unit 2 for connecting directly to the welding machine 102, and a second interface unit 1 provided in a remote welding torch 104, the first interface unit 2 being connectable to the second interface unit 1, for enabling remote control of the welding machine 102 from the welding torch 104. This arrangement allows certain welding parameters such as arc length, current and wire feed speed to be controlled directly at the welding torch by the operator, without needing to return to the welding machine. This is particularly useful when the operator is working in a restricted location located a distance away from the welding machine. The first and second interfaces 1, 2 may be connected wirelessly using radio-frequency, infra-red, tractor beam, Bluetooth (RTM) or Wi-Fi, or by a cable which may be provided by a two wire CAN (Controller Area Network) Bus connection. Process welding data may be saved for later use by storing on an electronic data-storage device, which is preferably provided on the welding torch. |
